The 2011 Villages Christmas Parade

Every year The Villages sponsors a Christmas Parade, which is held at the polo fields.

Gemma and I, along with several thousand others, thought we got to the fields early.  The gates opened for the noon festivities at 10 AM, and we were still about a quarter mile back in a line of golf carts.  It took over half an hour to get into our spot two deep along the parade route.

Local clubs and organizations have the opportunity to march in the parade.  This year there were about 70 different groups, floats, and whatevers marching along the one-mile parade route.  The show continued for well over an hour and a half and we got to see Villagers ranging from mounted horsemen to Shriners on motorized beverage coolers to (the highlight of the parade) belly-dancers -- belly-dancers???  The exit after the parade was something like leaving a sold-out Big Ten football game taking over an hour to get out of the fields.

You too can relive the parade through our pictures on the Picasa photo album.  I must warn you that there are a couple of OMG visuals, so be forewarned :)
