Illini Union
Gemma and I just returned from the University of Illinois Alumni Association's annual Leadership Conference that was held during Homecoming this weekend. It is for local alumni club leaders and volunteers across the nation. There were about 55 club representatives from San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix, Tucson, Austin, Washington DC, New York, and some other smaller clubs. The main emphasis of the conference was the roll-out of a new web site program called Alumni magnet. We are one of only four clubs that have gone live with it nationally. You can see ours at www.rockfordillini.com.
During the conference, our club, the Rockford Area Illini Club, was awarded the "Outstanding Large Club Award". This is the fourth time we have received the award in our 20+ years of existence! I have been the President last year and this, and I am really proud of our accomplishments. Over the years, we have awarded over $75,000 in scholarships to incoming freshmen from the Rockford area.
The game itself was the usual anemic display of offense from the Illini. We lost 24-14, but it was not that close. We got tickets to the game from the Alumni Assn. and had a great time with the other alumni club participants. The weather Thursday and Friday was very rainy and they even cancelled the Homecoming parade and pep rally Friday. But the game on Saturday was great football weather, mid-50s and sunny. We would like to do this again next year.
