We had a very eventful morning yesterday. Gemma and I went out for our usual morning walk around Rock Valley College. I came home, took a shower, and then came down for breakfast. At around 7 AM, as we were sitting at the kitchen table, the sky grew black (not just dark gray, but black) and the wind picked up very suddenly. All of a sudden it started monsooning. We couldn't even see out of the front windows because the rain was hitting them so hard -- and they are under our 4-foot porch overhang! This lasted for about 15 minutes.
By the time it was over, there were trees down, branches and leaves all over the yard, and (of course) garbage was all over the neighborhood. These things always happen on Sunday night/Monday morning before the garbage is picked up. Here is a photo of the power lines about a mile from our house. As we drove down Pepper Drive toward our house, trees, limbs, fences, and power lines were down all over the place. One massive oak with a 12-foot diameter root ball was pulled clean out of the ground. Many other trees and power poles were just snapped off.
We were one of the lucky ones in that we were without power for only the morning. Many around town still do not have power back two days later. ComEd said that this was the 2nd worse storm they have ever had. Over 700,000 people were without power across Northern Illinois and Chicago.
